    I DONT GET IT!

Death from the Seventh Seal. Makes bets on people's lives that they can't beat him at chess. He's more or less undefeatable.

Took me a little while to get the death reference, but that's good. ha.

Does deep blue have a soul?

    CAN RO-BOT FEEL E-MO-TION??
    CAN RO-BOT FEEL.... LOVE?

Which color is Death and which is Deep Blue?
  • Flashback81 · 1 year ago
Ironically, I just saw Ian McKellan's rendition of Death from Seventh Seal, in "Last Action Hero" last night. Much more personable than Bengt Ekerot.
  • Nathaniel · 1 year ago
why in god's name would you need to see Seventh Seal?! I have never heard of it, but the Game (normally chess) For Your Life is very old, and shows up in a large amount of other things. Two I can think of off the top of my head are Animaniacs did an episode, as well as the movie Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Death may not look the same, but with the title Blue Screen of Death and how it looks in general I got it immediately. That said...AWESOME!
  • Oso Borracho · 1 year ago
The game vs. death scene in Bill and Ted and a lot of films/shows are references to Seventh Seal. One of my favorite homages to it is the ending of Monty Python's Meaning of Life with the bickering about the salmon mousse. :D
  • Dead Robot · 1 year ago
I think it would have been more funnier if you had a pile of networked Mac Pros. They're cheaper.

    Juuuust kidding.
  • JimJimBinks · 1 year ago
People keep talking about The Seventh Seal. I've never seen it, but I got the joke after seeing Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. What I want to know is if Death asked for best two out of three and challenged Deep Blue to Connect Four.
  • Ravn · 1 year ago
Thank you for this, Det Sjunde Inseglet is my favorite movie, and this is funny as hell.
  • Tiny Tommy · 1 year ago
As always, incredible art. Well done.
  • RenĂ© · 1 year ago
    Hm. Kinda weak.
The art is gorgeous, don't get me wrong. But I would've wanted a bigger twist or something.
I understood that that was Death versus Deep Blue. But I would've had Death battling for his "life".
Since he lost, DB could say "Come with me" and take him away to the Robot Underworld or something.

Sometimes when people suggest how you guys can improve a particular comic I read their "better" idea and wonder if they have recently suffered a head injury....

..except for in the comments for "Pancake Dragon"
    >_< --heh

At first I was thinking about how in the old days of windows it was a sore looser when it came to chess if you won the game it would crash consistantly until you rebooted.

My mind was then taken back to Bill and Teds Bogus Journey when they were playing against death,

and when the two thoughts came together my interpatation was this

Death beat Big Blue. BB BSOD'ed (ie died) and required a reboot (resurection) before anything could be done with it and thusly loosingthe chess battle but wining the war for life
  • richard · 1 year ago
What made you come to that conclusion? You can see by Death's face that he lost.
  • idunno · 1 year ago
the computer beat death in chess, so death took his life. thats what it means right?
  • Rich · 1 year ago
It's a reference to the common theme in a lot of stories that when you're going to die, you get to play a game against Death, and if you win, you live. Death always wins, but apparently even Death can't beat Deep Blue.

I love it, it's definitely among my favorites of all time.
  • Oso Borracho · 1 year ago
Yessssssss Seventh Seal! I much recommend seeing it to those who haven't.
  • sid · 1 year ago
except that kasparov beat deep blue, so why wouldn't death be able to?
  • Burley · 1 year ago
Because Bill & Ted beat Death multiple times at multiple games.

The premise is Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, where, if you die, you may challenge Death to a game. If you win, you get to command death. If you lose, he gets your soul.
    Also, Station.

The second version of Deep Blue beat Kasparov.
  • Izzy · 1 year ago
Wow, this is an awesome comic!
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
    Alternate title: The 111th seal
  • Woody · 1 year ago
Swedish, as I am, I think this is hilarious :P, What colour is death? Black of course, that suits him the best, as he says in the movie! Though as some have pointed out, Kasparov beat Deep Blue so death if anybody would certainly beat him too, but that wouldn't make a funny comic! SO keep it up!
  • AnmanIndustries · 1 year ago
Yeah, but Kasparov claimed it "cheated". Or THEY cheated, they being the team.

    Regardless, I love this one.
  • Globo · 1 year ago
There were two Kasparov - Deep Blue matches.

    Kasparov beat Deep Blue v1.0

Then, one year later, Kasparov lost to Deep Blue v2.0

After his loss, Kasparov claimed IBM cheated and demanded a rematch. The rematch was not granted and Deep Blue was dismantled.

    Isn't tha a bishop?
  • Leth · 1 year ago
Hardly; it has a cross on top, the signature feature of the King piece.
  • Nina · 1 year ago
Damn, I needed to read the comments to get it... I guess I'm not used to Death having a face, what with the heavy-hooded "grim reaper" look being so standard. I guess I should watch more foreign films. :-P

I'm the only one thinking about science beating religion?

the comic is a reference to a movie, the seventh seal
  • Scott · 1 year ago
    Amazing!!
  • Nate · 1 year ago
First time posting, but not the first time I've been baffled by some comments.

It's a humorous look at what happens when a computer gets a Blue Screen of Death. In order to reboot, it needs to beat death in a game of chess. I think some people try to put way too much effort into finding subtle allusions in them that they ignore the big clues (case in point: the title). Death might be good at chess, but he can't make 2 billion calculations per second, and each time a computer reboots, he has to get his ass handed to him again.
  • Globo · 1 year ago
I'm baffled by YOUR comments, Nate. You're the one who's missing the point. How ironic.
  • nick · 1 year ago
you can even read the words "Deep Blue" at the top...

...and if you need further evidence then:

    Nate, you're an idiot.
  • Peter Ebel · 1 year ago
I lovingly raised and shook my fist in anger at this comic.
  • merck · 1 year ago
Nate, I think you're the one reading too much into it. That's very clearly a picture of Deep Blue, a computer that's famous for playing chess and not just any desktop PC that needs rebooting. This is a comic about Deep Blue beating Death. The title is just a pun on Deep Blue's name.
  • Cock · 1 year ago
this looks like it was drawn by a one armed flipper handed homosexual.
  • KyleZ · 1 year ago
    Deep blue is rather phallic.

-10 points for forgetting to throw in something racist, though. For shame, Cock.
  • Ren · 1 year ago
    Why is the board 8x7?
  • TPOD · 1 year ago
I'm nitpicking here, but why's the bottom right tile of the board black? (see layout of a chess board)

Nice issue by the way, even though it took me longer to get than the other ones :)
  • Fox · 1 year ago
Rotate the board 90 degrees in either direction, the shape is still the same but the position of the black and white corners is inverted.
  • TPOD · 1 year ago
'cept that as Ren stated, that board is also 7x8 for some reason :p
  • Rick · 1 year ago
Has anyone noticed yet that Deep Blue doesn't have a soul to bet in the first place?

Is there a strategy in chess called a 'screen' ? If so, do you think blue used it on death?

Great comic, though I bet the ignoramuses won't have seen the seventh seal and won't "get" it
  • scythemantis · 1 year ago
I don't think the media you have or haven't gotten around to seeing really determines being an ignoramus.

I get it, but I've never been fond of jokes that require you to be familiar with some specific work of fiction.
  • doroakarwb · 1 year ago
just because someone hasn't seen it you gotta insult them, huh.
and yeah i haven't seen it and don't get it.
  • mjgorman · 1 year ago
Great comic though I bet the condescending assholes who "get" will insult everyone else because they haven't seen the same movies as them.
