I asked Off about that too when I saw the preview. He said that he did not intentionally draw Sr. from OCC it must have been in his subconscious. What that says about Off subconscious.... I'll let you run with that

The likeness was completely unintentional. I was just going for the craggy old overweight biker look. You should see the reference layer of all the google image search pictures I grabbed for inspiration. There's some Hulk Hogan in there.

May I please use the second panel and call my fantasy football team Hells Crickets?!
  • GhengisVaughn · 1 year ago
LOL Although I loathe fantasy football in my workplace I am all about the Hell's Crickets making it to the Super Bowl in yours. Have to ask Off about the artwork though.
  • Goz · 1 year ago
So far I am 2-2, with an eye toward tanking the entire thing and going for first pick in the draft. It's the Seattle M's philosophy, except they screw that up by winning the last three games of the season. However, If P. Manning can get over whatever is ailing him...I've got a shot at Cricket Greatness.
  • Goz · 9 months ago
Just to update you, I actually won my superbowl! $450 bucks!

Off. I should apologize. I tore you apart for a strip not long ago. You didn't deserve it. This (and pretty much all of your work) is hilarious.
Great illustrations, great humor, great strip.

Please keep it up. And please never pull a PBF endless sabbatical on us. Whenever you post a new strip, it's the highlight of my work day.
  • Off · 1 year ago
Thanks! Its great to hear you've come around. It's also awesome to know that people out there look forward to reading this thing.

And for what it's worth, that pancake dragon comic did turn a lot of people off. I didn't take it personally. I think maybe we need to have a hall of shame section showcasing all of our spectacular failures, along with commentary...
  • RS · 1 year ago
If I were you, I'd remove the "post your comments" forum altogether. People with bad comments are more likely to post than people with good. And really, you don't need it. You know your shit is awesome.

As a commercial artist myself, I've found that my best stuff comes when I don't even listen to other people's feedback. I say you don't need. And neither do we.

It's a good thing you're not him. Looks like you were ignored!!
  • waka · 1 year ago
I have been reading the site forever and enjoy your work, but lately it has started to feel a little Family Guyish. Have you ever considered mixing up the paneling a little? I like your ideas, and the art is impeccable - but the jokes are coming across a little formulaic now. Wrack your brain and take it to the next level - TBK is really good, but it could be an icon.
  • Off · 1 year ago
I don't watch much Family Guy. What I've seen of it struck me as reliant on the surprise of non-sequiter... Some might argue that this comic relies on that as well, but I think we try to keep every comic contained in its own absurd sort of logic.

Regardless, I appreciate the constructive thoughts. As far as mixing up the paneling... It's something we've played with in the past, and likely will in the future. The three panel groove we're in now has a lot to do with the time it takes for me to finish the art.
  • Omnithea · 1 year ago
I love the comic but I've noticed a distinct problem. The jokes are almost entirely visual and require that you read the panels in order. Which is fine. Except I find that every time I bring up the page the first thing that catches my eye is the last panel. Thus I get the punchline before the joke. If it went back to vertical panels or the panels were big enough to require scrolling the joke would flow better.
  • bj · 1 year ago
possibly true. that was done to great effect in the best tbk of all time, fossilwood.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
I'm acclimated to western culture where we read things left to right. Also, I wouldn't publicly complain about my own dyslexic proclivities and blame them on someone else who's done a comic the way I've expected them to. But that's just me.
  • Omnithea · 1 year ago
My apologies if I came across as dyslexic. In public no less. Perhaps I should state it more clearly. So you can understand. The punchline is easily ruined in a web page format due to the relatively small size of the comic in comparison to the size of the rest of the page. After bouncing around the web for a while the eyes tend to wander. And I wasn't blaming the artist or author, as their work is unparalleled. I merely made a suggestion. Thank you for the most angry reply to a comment I've ever received outside of a You Tube Channel.
  • AnmanIndustries · 1 year ago
Best comeback in ages. (the youtube part)
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
you've misunderstood the tone of my reply pretty drastically. it wasn't angry at all, in fact it was more sarcastic with a little cheekiness thrown in for fun. the fact that you read so much aggression in it surprises me. i was referring to the absurd notion of you expecting a solution to your "distinct problem" which had to do with the basic habit reading left to right. to expect the author to change the format to suit your wandering eyes seems quite audacious, to be honest. for pete's sake, read it the way it's intended and enjoy that it even exists at all.to criticize the fact that it reads the way all western comics do or that it's "almost entirely visual" (hey, more art to look at!) seems insane. and please, lighten up a little. comics are fun, smile!

also, maybe try fixing the viewing setting so the comic appears larger when you open the page, not ruining the punchline.

    best wishes!

    charlie

I get what you're saying. I was, in fact, kind of worried about how this one would go over because the handlebar reflection detail in the first panel can be easily missed if the comic is too quickly read. For some reason it never occurred to me to go vertical with this one, even though we've done it in the past. I'm actually kicking myself just a bit because I think that this particular comic would have looked rather nice vertically with "widescreen" panels.
  • Jake_I · 1 year ago
Absolutely fantastic. The only way it could be better would be if we got to see a whole gang of Hells Crickets.
  • me · 1 year ago
Love this one :D Though I'm a fan of the pancake dragon as well. It's not that often I don't get a punchline, and one that requires me to look beyond the obvious is definitely worth the time!

A 'lol' at work = "Great job" + pat on the back. :)

Love your work, and even though I was one of the people that didn't quite 'get' Pancake Dragon at first, my appreciation of the strip has not wavered. Keep up the excellent work.
  • Anal, Irked Nonetheless · 1 year ago
Ach! I'm not usually one to offer criticism as an anonymous keyboard operator, but please, please do something about the title typeface! From a design point of view, it's intrusive and boorish, far too large, has a terrible, rigid, cloying font and there's no need for the overbearing "quotation marks".

When you see pieces of art in a gallery, the title of the work is subdued and subtle; not larger, bolder, and more eye-catching than the artwork itself.

For a work that's based in subtlety, the typeface is the metaphorical equivalent of being sledgehammer'd. With a "SLEDGEHAMMER"
  • Irked at Anal one · 1 year ago
You usually offer what instead? Helpful advice? Somehow I really doubt that.
  • Anally Retented (again) · 1 year ago
Certainly seems as though I was more curt than I intended.

I didn't mean 'remove the title text' I meant 'tone down the font' in terms of size and obtrusiveness. You know how annoying and unwarranted it is when YOU SEE WRITING IN CAPS LOCK? Or perhaps you squirm when people "pepper" their "words" with "apostrophes"? Well, the title text does that for me (replace uppercased text with oversized, boldened text)

It's really quite a small irk, and no comment on the overall (high) quality of the comic itself.

So please, reconsider the title font & presentation!
  • Off · 1 year ago
I should probably add my two bits here. I didn't take your remarks as an attack and I appreciate the feedback. I'll give it some consideration, especially if other people chime in with the same sentiments.

Personally, I find it visually appealing (I designed it that way, after all). The font I'm using on the title and most of the site for that matter is just Arial with some slightly squeezed spacing. Arial's kind of boring, but distracting or obtrusive is not something I've ever associated it with. I wonder if some other font is displaying on your system possibly?

I would like other people's feedback on this, however, this may all be rendered moot as I'm intending to do a little bit of redesign in the title area eventually, adding some nav buttons and possibly more.
  • Patrick · 1 year ago
I think it looks good as it is personally, I think the title size works well with the comic. I actually really like the site design, I think it's pretty effective.

Also, great work with the comic as always :) Inspires me to make my own comic, my drawing skills aren't anywhere near yours though!
  • Pedro · 1 year ago
You know... It is really annoying at 640x480 resolution... but at 1600x900 it's just fine.
Just don't let the title become bigger than the comic and you should be fine.
  • Cody · 1 year ago
Sometimes the titles are an additional key to interpreting the comic.

When I first saw this, I had to glance at it about three times until I actually understood. I was like "Hell's Crickets? It's Hell's angels...OH GAWD, HE'S ON A FRIGGIN' POGO STICK LOLOLOLOL"
I mean, it was something like that. =D
Though, I must say, the title isn't as clever as usual.

    Life Imitates Art

Yesterday I was barreling down the freeway when who did I pass but the dude in your comic strip, although his leathers had some cool tassels and beads that your dude does not. However, rather than a pogo stick, he was sitting atop a three-wheeled 'motorcycle' that at the rear looked like the back half of a real old car, and the front was totally cut away to look like a real easy-rider chopper. He was all laid back as though he was sitting in his favorite La-Z-Boy recliner. All that was missing was a TV and a beer in his mitt. I laughed for about 10 minutes and immediately associated him with your cartoon strip! (Maybe he had a pogo stick in the trunk.)
