I thought it was the effects of the drugs doing that to the kangaroo. The heroin needle probably did it when he put it in his pouch.

Yup, Requiem for a Dream ref. There's a repeating sequence in the movie of one of the characters shooting up - a montage - and the last sequence is a close-up of his eye dilating rapidly.
